Movie Kick

I'm not a movie person by any means... not really a TV person either. I have zero ability to sit and be entertained for two hours at a time. That, and my college budget doesn't allow me to get any kind of cable TV The reception is so bad in my apartment building that I don't even get the basic channels everyone can get with a tin foil antenna. So, I don't watch a lot of anything on TV (mostly, it's just video games :P)

Anyway, I bought a Blockbuster Rewards card which gives you a free movie every month, and rent one - get one free deals, and rent 5 - get one free offers... It's pretty kewl... Anyway, I've been renting 2 movies every week (which, now that I think about it, probably costs as much as basic cable per month) The whole "take a week to watch me" is a good deal because I can only watch 1/3 to 1/2 of a movie in one sitting. Anyway, I've watched a couple of good films and wanted to promote them.

If you like anime, Princess Mononoke is for you. It has stunning art and great voice acting. The soundtrack is amazing too! Even if they never said a word, you would be completely mesmerized a la Fantasia 2000. It's a pretty deep little movie :)

I watched The Terminal this morning and it made me cry, and I don't cry very often... The movie is this sad little comedy that has really uplifting tones to it. Steven Spielberg directs and Tom Hanks does some really amazing character acting which I didn't really think he could pull off before I saw the film.

BTW... any movie recommendations for next week? Old or new, I probably haven't seen it. As it is, I still have yet to watch Casablanca, Star Wars, Godfather, Rocky, etc...

If you like Princess Mononoke you should rent Spirited Away. Disney dubbed the voice acting so the english version is really well done.

Well, princess mononoke was a pretty good movie, though I think I preferred it subtitled (even though I love M. Driver).

If anime is your thing, I think you might like Kite. It's a bit graphic, but it's short, good and was really something on the order of Akira when it comes to defining a genre.

Spirited away was nicely done, and for once it felt like a studio ghibli film had an ending (I can't begin to tell you how gipped I felt when Kiki's delivery service was over, the story really had just started).

Real movies with real people that are worth watching...unfortunately you and I have very similar tastes for watching movies when we do bother to watch movies, so there's a lot of overlap already, but here's some suggestions:

Flight of the Phoenix - whenever it comes out. You can even watch the old version with Jimmy Stewart. I personally prefer the JS version (because JS is a golden god), but I thought that the remake really did a good job.

Being John Malkovich - This is an amazing movie and first in my list of abstract fuck with your mind films. It's kind of interesting that if they had done things a little differently, this could have been one of the scariest movies ever made.

"Harvey" and "Donnie Darko" (really should be watched together) - Harvey is quite possibly the best JS movie ever made. Becomes a major influence on later works such as Donnie Darko that give it more of a darker appeal. While Harvey was somewhat lighthearted, JS actually wanted to play the character much darker, and got to do so on broadway.
Napoleon Dynamite - as stupidly promoted as this movie seems to be on the surface, it really does turn out to be funny and sad and pathetic at the same time.
Eternal Sunshine.... - It places a second in my list of abstract mind films

Oh, you could also watch Brazil but only if you get it with the british ending. Don't watch it with the american ending. Though I warn you, it's a Terry Gilliam movie. (Can you believe Q didn't like Time Bandits...psh!!!!)

    Hope that helps

UGH! TIME BANDITS! Don't remind me of the 2 hours of my life that I wasted...

I watched Brazil... up until the ending... So, I have yet to watch the ending.

I also watched Akira... up until the ending... So, I have yet to watch the ending. (are we noticing a trend here?) :P

I always fall asleep during movies. It's the whole, being quiet for two hours that gets me every time. I hated 'eternal sunshine.' I fell asleep because it just couldn't hold my interest and was way to abstract.

If you like suspense and action, rent Basic -John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson. You probably haven't seen Usual Suspects either. Both are really good.

I'm not sure I can recommend anything you like, so I'll just say this: Nexflix. It rocks! :P

Loooove Princess Mononokee...have it here at work and watch it everynow and then...

Good movie to watch if you are into love stories. Check out "What Dreams May Come" with Robin William...the dude is funny, but this is I think his only serious movie...talk about getting confuse and coming up with a really good story.

Boondock Saints, Scent of a Woman, K-Pax, Run Ronnie Run, The Green Mile, The God Father 1 & 2.... not 3. These are some movies I really like, Scent of a Woamn is one of my all time favorites.

What dreams may come - It was okay, but wasn't something I'd write home to mom about. Besides that, Robin Williams best film has got to be Dead Poet's Society...or One Hour Photo (but all I did was take some pictures...).

Jermey's choices were good though, Boondock Saints is awesome, it's all about Willem Defoe's kiss. Actually, it's all about the look on the person's face right before Willem Defoe kisses em.

If you haven't seen South Park: Bigger Longer Uncut, you should. Just remember, 'When Canada is dead and gone there'll be no more Celine Dion!!!'

If documentaries are you thing, I would suggest OutFoxed.

Back to anime, there's always the cowboy bebop movie.

Blade Runner, Dark City, Tron, 12 Monkeys are classics in the Sci-Fi genre

Hearts in Atlantis, The ShawShank Redemption, The Green Mile are all pretty good King stories turned movies.

Kill Bill 1 (but really just so you could see Kill Bill 2), Leaving Las Vegas, Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty, are all pretty decent "mod" flicks.
